If the device is missing motion, detecting too much motion, or not sending alerts, check the following.
Check the device is online
A Ring device must be online to detect motion and send alerts.
- Open the Ring app.
- Check whether the device is online.
- Open Device Health and check the network status.
- Reconnect the device to Wi-Fi if needed.
Remove the protective film
Some Ring devices are supplied with protective film over the front. If this film is still in place, it can affect motion detection. Remove any protective film before testing.
Make sure Motion Detection is turned on
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap the menu.
- Tap Devices.
- Choose the Ring device.
- Make sure Motion Detection is turned on.
Adjust Motion Settings
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap Devices.
- Choose your Ring device.
- Tap Motion Settings.
Then check the following:
- Motion Zones: Make sure the zones cover the area you want to monitor.
- Motion Sensitivity: Increase sensitivity if the device is missing motion. Lower it if there are too many alerts.
- Motion Frequency: On battery-powered models, choose Frequently if the device is missing events, but note this can reduce battery life.
- Advanced Motion Detection: Turn this on if available.
- Smart Alerts: These can help improve detection accuracy for people, vehicles and other objects, but may require a Ring subscription.
- Motion Schedules: Make sure there is no schedule preventing alerts at certain times.
Check the mounting position
Motion detection can be affected by where the device is installed.
- Make sure the camera has a clear view of the area.
- Avoid pointing it directly at busy roads, trees, flags, reflective surfaces, or moving shadows.
- Adjust the angle if people are walking too close to the edge of the camera view.
- Use the wedge or corner kit if needed to improve the viewing angle.
If motion is detected but alerts are not received
This may be a notification issue rather than a motion detection issue.
Check:
- Motion Alerts are turned on in the Ring app.
- Phone notifications are enabled for the Ring app.
- Do Not Disturb or Focus mode is turned off.
- Battery optimisation settings are not blocking Ring notifications.
- Motion Schedules are not preventing alerts.
- The Ring app is updated.
If motion still does not work
Reset or power cycle the Ring device and test again. If the device is online, correctly positioned and motion settings are enabled, but it still does not detect motion, the device may need further support.
